Overview of the Environmental Justice Framework
This Environmental Justice Framework has been developed as part of the Inclusive Environments project and has been co-produced with community voices, together with public and private sector stakeholders. The Framework aims to reduce inequalities in environmental sustainability decision-making by ensuring inclusive, equitable, and effective development and implementation of such measures. It focuses on:
- Engaging marginalised communities early in planning processes of environmental sustainability measures.
- Mainstreaming inclusivity throughout sustainability initiatives.
- Promoting equality of opportunity, not just mitigating harm.
The Framework is informed by Inclusive Environments research and uses an Equality Impact Assessment approach. It emphasises co-production, particularly through the Local Voices Framework.
To support implementation, it includes:
• An Environmental Justice Template for recording assessments and consultations.
• An Environmental Justice Flowchart to guide usage.
The Framework is designed to be dynamic and adaptable, with ongoing evaluation and case studies/example scenarios to refine best practices.
